EMDR Therapy in Mequon, WI — Heal Trauma at Its Root
Evidence-based trauma therapy that works with your brain — not against it. Available in person in Mequon and virtually across Wisconsin.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — is one of the most well-researched, evidence-based treatments available for trauma, PTSD, and anxiety. Developed in the late 1980s and now endorsed by the World Health Organization and the American Psychological Association, EMDR has helped millions of people process painful experiences and reclaim their lives.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require you to narrate every detail of what happened. Instead, it works directly with the way your brain stores traumatic memories — helping you process and integrate them so they no longer hold the same emotional charge.
How Does EMDR Work?
When something overwhelming happens, your brain doesn’t always get the chance to fully process it. The memory gets stored with all its original emotion, body sensations, and beliefs intact — frozen in time. That’s why a sound, a smell, or a look from someone can send you right back to a moment that happened years ago. Your nervous system doesn’t know it’s over.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation — guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones — to activate both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. This mimics the natural processing that occurs during REM sleep, giving your brain a second chance to do what it couldn’t do the first time: file the memory as the past, not the present.
The result is lasting change — not just coping strategies. Clients often describe feeling like the memory is still there, but it no longer has a grip on them.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy
EMDR therapy at Renewed Focus Counseling is paced to feel right for you. We begin with a thorough assessment and preparation phase — building the safety, skills, and trust needed before any trauma processing begins. You will never be pushed to move faster than your nervous system is ready for.
Sessions are available in person at our warm, private Mequon office, or virtually via secure video for clients anywhere in Wisconsin. We are currently accepting new clients.
Why Choose Renewed Focus Counseling for EMDR?
Our therapists are trained in EMDR through EMDRIA-approved programs and bring a trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming lens to every session. We integrate EMDR with other evidence-based approaches — including ACT, IFS-informed therapy, and polyvagal-informed care — to create a treatment plan that honors your unique nervous system and story.
We also offer Ketamine-Assisted EMDR (KA-EMDR) for clients seeking deeper or accelerated trauma processing. Learn more about KA-EMDR here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on the complexity of what you’re working on. Some people experience significant relief in 6–12 sessions for a single-incident trauma; complex or childhood trauma typically takes longer. We’ll discuss a realistic timeline during your consultation.
Is EMDR covered by insurance?
EMDR is a recognized, evidence-based treatment and is covered by many insurance plans when billed as psychotherapy. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your out-of-network benefits. We can provide a superbill for reimbursement.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail during EMDR?
No — and this is one of the things people appreciate most about EMDR. You don’t need to narrate every detail of what happened. EMDR works with the memory itself, not the story around it. You stay in control of how much you share.
Can EMDR be done virtually?
Yes. Research supports the effectiveness of telehealth EMDR, and we offer it via secure video for clients across Wisconsin. We use auditory bilateral stimulation or a tapping technique that works well in an online format.
What’s the difference between EMDR and talk therapy?
Talk therapy primarily works through insight and verbal processing. EMDR works more directly with how the brain stores traumatic memories, using bilateral stimulation to help the nervous system complete the processing it couldn’t do at the time. Many clients find EMDR creates change that years of talk therapy couldn’t.
What is the difference between EMDR and Ketamine-Assisted EMDR?
Standard EMDR is highly effective for most clients. KA-EMDR adds a low dose of oral ketamine to the session, which promotes neuroplasticity and can help clients access traumatic material that feels defended or out of reach. It’s typically recommended for complex trauma or clients who feel stuck in standard EMDR.
How do I know if I’m ready for EMDR?
Readiness for EMDR is something we assess together. Before any trauma processing begins, we spend time building stabilization skills and the therapeutic relationship. If you’re curious about EMDR, the best first step is a free 15-minute consultation.
You don’t have to keep carrying this. EMDR therapy can help you process what happened and move forward — at a pace that feels right for you.
Schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation to talk through what you’re looking for and see if we’re a good fit. We serve clients in Mequon, Milwaukee, Ozaukee County, and virtually across Wisconsin.
