Adult ADHD Therapy in Wisconsin — Affirming, Evidence-Based Support

Therapy that finally gets it. Neurodivergent-affirming ADHD support for adults — including late diagnosis, women’s ADHD, and the ADHD-trauma connection.

You’ve Always Known Something Was Different

Maybe you’ve spent years being told you’re too scattered, too sensitive, too much — or not enough. Maybe you’ve built an impressive life on the outside while quietly drowning on the inside. Maybe you’ve only recently learned that what you’ve been living with has a name: ADHD.

Adult ADHD is widely misunderstood — especially in women, who are diagnosed at far lower rates than men and often don’t receive a diagnosis until their 30s, 40s, or beyond. At Renewed Focus Counseling, we specialize in working with adults who are navigating ADHD — whether newly diagnosed, long-diagnosed, or still figuring it out.

What Adult ADHD Actually Looks Like

  • Chronic overwhelm despite being highly capable
  • Difficulty starting tasks, even ones you care about (executive dysfunction)
  • Time blindness — losing hours without realizing it
  • Emotional dysregulation: big feelings that arrive fast and feel hard to manage
  • Masking — working overtime to appear “normal,” leading to exhaustion
  • Perfectionism and people-pleasing as coping strategies
  • Sensory overwhelm and social exhaustion
  • A persistent sense of underachieving despite real effort

If this sounds familiar, you are not lazy, broken, or difficult. Your brain works differently — and it deserves support that actually understands that.

Our Approach to ADHD Therapy

At Renewed Focus Counseling, ADHD therapy is neurodivergent-affirming from the ground up. We draw from ACT, DBT, IFS, EMDR, and polyvagal-informed care to create a treatment plan tailored to your nervous system, your history, and your goals.

The ADHD & Trauma Connection

Research increasingly shows that ADHD and trauma frequently co-occur. Years of being misunderstood, criticized, or overlooked leave marks. Many ADHDers carry significant shame, relational wounds, and nervous system dysregulation that go far beyond executive function challenges. Our trauma-informed approach means we treat the whole person — not just the diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a formal ADHD diagnosis to start therapy?

No. You don’t need a diagnosis to begin therapy. Many of our clients come in exploring whether ADHD might explain their experiences, while others have a long-standing diagnosis. We work with you wherever you are in that process.

Can therapy help with ADHD, or do I need medication?

Therapy and medication address different aspects of ADHD and work best together for many people. Medication can help with focus and impulse control; therapy helps with the emotional, relational, and identity dimensions of ADHD — the shame, the burnout, the patterns that medication alone doesn’t touch. We don’t prescribe medication, but we work collaboratively with prescribers.

What does “neurodivergent-affirming” therapy actually mean?

It means we don’t treat ADHD as a deficit to be fixed. We recognize that neurodivergent brains work differently — not worse — and we build therapy around understanding and working with your brain, not against it.

I’ve always been high-functioning. Can I really have ADHD?

Yes — and this is one of the most common questions we hear, especially from women. High-functioning ADHD is real. Many people with ADHD develop sophisticated coping strategies (masking, perfectionism, over-preparation) that allow them to appear fine on the outside while exhausted on the inside.

What is the connection between ADHD and trauma?

Research shows ADHD and trauma co-occur at high rates. Years of being misunderstood, criticized, or overlooked leave real marks. Many ADHDers carry shame and nervous system dysregulation that goes beyond executive function. Our trauma-informed approach addresses both.

Do you work with adults who were diagnosed as children, or only late-diagnosed adults?

Both. Whether you’ve known about your ADHD for decades or just received a diagnosis last year, we meet you where you are.

Is ADHD therapy available virtually?

Yes — all of our services are available via secure telehealth for clients anywhere in Wisconsin. Many clients with ADHD actually find virtual sessions easier to access consistently, without the executive function barrier of commuting to an office.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, exploring the possibility of ADHD, or simply exhausted from years of trying harder — we’d love to talk.
