Trauma Doesn’t Always Look Like What You Think

Trauma is anything that overwhelmed your nervous system’s ability to cope. It can be a single incident, or it can be the accumulation of years of emotional neglect, chronic stress, relational wounds, or growing up in an environment where you never felt truly safe. You may be living with trauma’s effects without ever having named it that. It might show up as hypervigilance, difficulty trusting others, emotional numbness, a persistent sense of shame, physical symptoms, flashbacks, or difficulty being present.

These are not character flaws. They are your nervous system’s learned responses to experiences that were too much to process at the time. And they can heal.

Our Approach to Trauma Therapy

At Renewed Focus Counseling, trauma therapy is never one-size-fits-all. We draw from EMDR, IFS, ACT, polyvagal-informed care, and Ketamine-Assisted EMDR to create a treatment plan tailored to your nervous system, your history, and your goals.

We work with adults navigating PTSD and C-PTSD, childhood emotional neglect, relational and attachment trauma, single-incident trauma, dissociation, trauma-ADHD overlap, and postpartum trauma and anxiety.

What Trauma Therapy at Renewed Focus Looks Like

We begin where you are. Before any trauma processing begins, we spend time building safety, stabilization skills, and the therapeutic relationship. You will never be pushed to move faster than your nervous system is ready for. Our Mequon office is designed to feel calm and grounding — soft lighting, a welcoming fireplace, and a private, quiet space. Virtual sessions are available for clients across Wisconsin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if what I experienced counts as trauma?

Trauma isn’t defined by the event — it’s defined by the impact on your nervous system. If something overwhelmed your ability to cope and left lasting effects on how you feel, think, or relate to others, it counts. You don’t need to have survived a “big T” trauma to benefit from trauma therapy.

What is Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) and how is it different from PTSD?

PTSD typically develops after a single traumatic event. C-PTSD develops after prolonged, repeated trauma — such as childhood neglect or abuse, domestic violence, or growing up in a chaotic or unsafe environment. C-PTSD often involves deeper impacts on identity, self-worth, and the ability to regulate emotions and relationships. We specialize in both.

Do I have to talk about what happened in detail?

Not necessarily. With EMDR — our primary trauma processing modality — you don’t need to narrate every detail of your history. We work at your pace, and you stay in control of how much you share and when.

I’ve been in therapy before and it didn’t help. Why would this be different?

Traditional talk therapy is valuable, but it primarily works through insight — and insight alone doesn’t always reach the nervous system. EMDR and the other experiential approaches we use work more directly with how trauma is stored in the body and brain. Many clients who felt stuck in talk therapy find real movement here.

How long does trauma therapy take?

It depends on the complexity of your history and your goals. Single-incident trauma may resolve in a relatively short course of EMDR. Complex or childhood trauma typically takes longer. We’ll discuss a realistic timeline during your consultation.

Is trauma therapy available virtually?

Yes. All of our services, including EMDR, are available via secure telehealth for clients anywhere in Wisconsin. Research supports the effectiveness of telehealth trauma therapy.

Do you work with adolescents as well as adults?

Yes. Our clinical team works with adolescents and adults navigating trauma, anxiety, ADHD, and life transitions. Please contact us to discuss whether our practice is the right fit for your teen.

Healing from trauma is possible — even when it feels impossibly far away.
